If you think that the holiday spirit goes away after the New Year celebration is over, you can not be more wrong. On January 14th the party is still going strong in Russia, everyone is celebrating the Old New Year.

Even though The Old New Year is not an official holiday, January 14th is widely enjoyed although on a smaller scale. It is a tradition to have another, smaller feast. Most Russians keep their New Year trees until after the Old New Year.

The Old New Year or the Orthodox New Year is an informal traditional holiday, celebrated as the start of the New Year by the Julian calendar. In the 20th and 21st centuries, the Old New Year falls on January 14 in the Gregorian calendar.

Folk traditions, like the singing of carols and the telling of fortunes, may be observed during Russia’s Old New Year, and a large meal may be served.

A couple of folk traditions were an essential part of the celebration:

  • Children and young adults traveled from house-to-house with the carols, asking for treats. The treat was usually the pirogi or any other food. All the food was collected in a basket and eaten just after the event.
  • The Telling of Fortunes (Гадание) - a ritual aimed at contacting the spirits in order to obtain information about the future, was a must, especially for the girls dreaming about happy marriage and love and for everyone who wanted to know what the future holds. Throwing a felt boot (valenok) or any other type of shoe on the road and looking at the direction of the toe, which supposed to show the direction of where the future husband comes from, was one of the most popular activities.

Networking and Demos by entrepreneurial organizations impacting “The Next Billion” around the world

Wednesday, November 16, 2016
6:00 pm Networking and Demos by entrepreneurial organizations impacting “The Next Billion” around the world
7:00 pm Program

A growing number of innovators and entrepreneurs are focused on the next
billion people who are digitally excluded, many of whom live in extreme
poverty, globally and locally. For example, since its first loan to a
fishmonger in Uganda, Kiva, the world's largest crowd-lending marketplace for
underserved entrepreneurs, has allowed people to lend money via the Internet
to underserved entrepreneurs. Kiva has crowdfunded more than one million
loans to more than 2.1 million entrepreneurs in 82 countries, totaling nearly
$1 billion dollars with a repayment rate over 97 percent.

How are entrepreneurs changing the lives of the next billion, one by one? How
is technology being used as a force for democratization of access and
opportunity? Where are hot spots around the world for entrepreneurship and
what can Silicon Valley learn from them? What are some positive roles for
government? Is there a way to dismantle the false choice between purpose and
profit?

Join us for a fascinating fireside chat between Julie Hanna, Kiva executive
chairman and Presidential Ambassador for Global Entrepreneurship, with
Exponential’s Marguerite Gong Hancock.

Admission is free.  Register here:
https://connect.computerhistory.org/pages/events/2016-11-julie-hanna

This event is part of Global Entrepreneurship Week. During one week each
November, thousands of events and competitions in 160 countries inspire
millions to engage in entrepreneurial activity while connecting them to
potential collaborators, mentors and even investors. Powered by the Kauffman
Foundation, the initiative is supported by dozens of world leaders and a
network of more than 15,000 partner organizations. For 2016, GEW is November

Elite one day 226 miles fundraising bike ride from San Francisco to Truckee.

The tour takes place once a year some time during the summer and ONLY expert and elite level rides are encouraged to register. Even though 226 miles is not the longest some of us ever rode, the specifics of this ride make Gooddler Tour one of the toughest events you have ever entered. Do not be misguided by rather mild statistics of the past rides. It is not really 13,000ft of climbing over more than 200 miles, it is more like 10,000ft of climbing going straight uphill over the last 70 miles.

Variety of temperatures, from morning Bay Area cold (~40F) to the super hot Sacramento Valley (~+100F) and back to super cold mountain temps (~30F-40F), makes it hard to swallow even for the strongest. Diverse terrain is another challenge. Riding through little towns' dirty roads, open spaces and narrow roads in the Sierras will test your handling skills and patience. Add to all of that riding in the dark and you get the whole package a few other rides have to offer.

... but rewards are endless. You will be all year hot topic at all cocktail parties you go. After all, every Californian drove from Bay Area to Tahoe at least once and for most it is too long even by car.

Oh, yes, and don't forget a certificate you will receive upon the completion of the journey.
